Tidewater Skanska, Inc. led the joint venture which constructed 17 new bridge piers for the new $2.2B Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project. 11 of the piers were constructed in the Potomac River with extremely soft bottom conditions. The project required installation of 628 each steel pipe piles in diameters of 48, 54, 66, and 72 inches in lengths from 170 to 210 ft. The project included construction of ship collision structures to protect the piers. A total of 126,000 cubic yards of concrete were placed as were 6,300 tons of reinforcing and post tensioning steel. 48,000 cubic yards of material was excavated and removed utilizing mud scows. This project had extensive environmental requirements including the development of a bubbler curtain system for protecting marine life. Tidewater Skanska, Inc. designed and fabricated a bubbler curtain that exceeded requirements. This was a schedule driven project with 15 interim milestone dates each with liquidated damages. In completion, all 15 milestone dates were met on schedule.
