M25 Motorway, UK

Social aspects

Benefits for the community
The benefits of the scheme will:
• improve reliability of journey time
• improve safety
• reduce congestion
• improve information to drivers

In addition, it is recognised that the widening of the M25 is essential to secure the long-term economic prosperity of South East England.

The M25 is one of the world's biggest orbital roads, used by 250,000 vehicles a day. It's a vital artery for London and the consortium needs to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. The new lanes will help to improve traffic flows on the M25, which is one of the world's busiest roads on which users experience poor journey time reliability, especially at peak times.

Skanska, as part of the Connect Plus Consortium, will also be required to respond to incidents, provide winter maintenance, and keep the motorway and its structures in good condition over a 30 year period.

Delivery of the widening will be co-ordinated with other improvements in traffic management to lock-in the benefits of widening, such as the introduction of variable speed limits to smooth traffic flows in busy periods.
