Modern bus depot on seven floors

When the Fredriksdal bus depot, in Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm, is opened, it will feature 140 parking spaces for Stockholm’s inner city buses. It will also include workshops, bus-wash facilities, and a garage where the buses can be fueled, charged and serviced when not in traffic.

The assignment is a construction partnership between SL (Stockholm Public Transport) and Skanska, with the depot covering about 50,000 square meters. The first sod was turned in August 2012 and completion of the depot is planned for 2017.

The building comprises seven floors. The first floor, which is in the basement, will house the bus garage. Floor two, which is a semi-basement, will accommodate a vehicle garage and service spaces. Floor three will house fueling, wash and service stations for the buses. Floors four to seven will be office facilities, to be used partly by SL. Site use is optimized by the distribution of facilities on a number of floors.

Integrating the bus depot in an urban environment is a key aspect of the project. The bus depot is located between Hammarby Sjöstad’s main street – Hammarby Allé – and the area’s waterside key. However, it will not be visible for passersby, since office and residential buildings will be built to screen off the depot from Hammarby Allé.

Since the bus depot is located centrally, buses will be able to travel smoothly to and from the depot, with only a short distance to Stockholm’s inner city. This will reduce emissions. Moreover, all the biogas used by the buses will be piped directly from the Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant. This eliminates the need to use heavy trucks in transporting the gas to the buses in the underground depots.
