Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. was awarded this $83 million waterfront project to reconstruct 4,230 linear feet of an existing wharf facility in four phases. All work was performed within the operational boundaries of Norfolk International Terminals (NIT). Skanska maintained close coordination with port operations and the construction staff to ensure continuation of port operations and progress of construction activities on an aggressive schedule in order to prepare the wharf for inbound container cranes from China. This project was completed on time with early completion bonuses received for stages two, three, and four.
In addition to site preparation, Skanska demolished and installed a waterfront structure and associated utilities in a manner that minimized disruption to port operations. Construction work involved the installation of pre-cast concrete piles, sheet piling, a cast-in-place concrete wharf structure, asphalt concrete pavement, installation/relocation of various utilities and associated minor tasks. Skanska demolished approximately 185,000 square feet of existing concrete wharf and the supporting concrete piles, removed and disposed of 190,000 square feet of asphalt concrete paving, and removed underground utilities. Demolition also included removal and disposal of four existing 50-foot gage container cranes at the facility. Skanska installed 1,352 36-inch cylinder pile and 1,072 24-inch and 18-inch prestressed concrete piling. In addition, we installed 5,059 linear feet of AZ-36 and AZ-18 steel sheet piling. We also installed a cast-in-place concrete wharf structure with encapsulated cap, along with 8,454 linear feet of crane rail with associated beams and cable trench. In addition, Skanska installed and relocated electrical, mechanical, and various utilities including a duct bank. We also provided earthwork, miscellaneous site work, and asphalt concrete pavement.
