Skanska developed and constructed The Monument Building, in the heart of the City of London. It creates a stunning backdrop to The Monument, the famous landmark that commemorates the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The ten-storey building was designed by architect Ken Shuttleworth’s Make, and has 8,000sqm of office space and 370sqm for retailers. Four of the floors have terraces, which provide excellent views of the capital.

It’s designed to meet the BREEAM excellent environmental standard. It has a green roof, solar panels and an intelligent lighting control system.

Light and shade

One of The Monument Building’s most striking features is the twisting fins on its south side, made in Italy from anodised aluminium. The 69 fins create a signature pattern and are designed to let in as much natural light as possible, while shading the building from heat gain.

Efficient, effective construction

We employed a full-time building information modelling (BIM) manager to implement best-practice BIM techniques, leading to measurable cost and time savings.

Minimising human error

We provided our steelwork subcontractor with an accurate model on which to base the steelwork designs. The ability to provide such highly sophisticated models had not previously been possible, due to software incompatibility. Working with the BIM model proved to be much faster and reduced the possibility of human error.

Cost saving preparation

In addition, a review of the 3D model revealed 81 potential construction clashes between cladding brackets and cast concrete posts. These clashes, which were not evident in the 2D drawings, were designed out before construction began, realising significant cost and time savings.

Facilities management

We are providing a range of facilities management services, planned and reactive, at the development. These include maintaining the fabric of the building, mechanical and electrical engineering and safety inspections.

Our highly skilled team also maintains a number of other commercial developments in London.

The Monument Building is our first building in the capital built under the Workplaces by Skanska banner.
