“We perceive LCA as a useful tool that will enable us to minimize negative impacts on the environment. Verification of EPD is seen by us as a confirmation of our long-term efforts to comply with principles of sustainable business in all our activities.”

Why may EPD be of interest to the client? From the perspective of clients - developers, it is important to know what specific benefit the solution has for him and how much he must pay for it, or better say, when his investment will pay back. The benefits include unquestionably the awareness about the impact of the construction on the environment and knowledge of the life cycle of its parts. More precise data and data revealing the energy merits of each product linked to the knowledge of its life cycle will be important for the comparison and selection of building materials in the long term.

Skanska Group in the Czech Republic and Slovakia What is the sense of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the manufacturer? EPD contributes to greater transparency of what is happening in construction industry. For us as a manufacturer detailed data gathered during the assessment enable us to better assess not only the impact and effects of our products on the environment, but also the input costs. Thanks to this we can more effectively focus on those resources whose prices will rise in the future e.g. due to higher energy prices, when reducing the input costs. One certificate for the first building is not as important as a lot of data that will be comparable. Therefore, we will use the EDP and consistently collect data on all of our projects. The outputs of products assessment process will then be an important basis for the preparation of other contracts. The one who will know in time what he is offering or what he could be offering has an advantage for sure.

Our buildings and establishments follow the measurable information about the impact of the product on the environment. Our priorities include strategies aimed at reducing energy, water and CO2 consumption. We also want to achieve a low share of landfilled waste. The objectives of our environmental strategy include reducing the impact of our activities on climate changes. We have been practicing and improving a tool for carbon footprint measurement for a long time. The EPD helps us on our journey and we think about its use for our own products across the company in the future.
